Susan and I normally play bocce at the beach above. "X" marks the beach in front of 53rd Avenue at Cherry Grove Beach (North Myrtle Beach), SC. The beach in the upper right is Waites Island, a totally undeveloped island. We love to take the boat over to the island and walk along the beach. It is really cool.

Sand Sharks is the name of our SCBBA chapter. Here is Susan with a small shark which we found beached on Waties Island.

With the court drawn and Bocce balls lined up, we are ready to start. Susan is using our "court drawing stick" to write a love note to me n the sand. ;-)

This is a good shot of Cherry Grove beach. What a GREAT BOCCE COURT!

Here is Susan making her shot, using an overhand lob. This is my favorite way to throw bocce balls. It is easier to control distance, speed and placement when playing the break.

The Bocce Bongo Dudes from Charlotte, NC. Have drum - will travel. They go up and down the beach giving "bongo concerts". Party on Wayne... Party on Garth...

This is my dad, DH. He is a great line judge and a pretty fair bocce player to boot. .

Here are my friends and I in a game of doubles. Johnny (front left), his wife Karol (or Carolyn to me), Gary, and then me in the cap. Here,Johnny and I are scopin' out Gary's ball to see if it is still in bounds. I am happy to report that Carolyn and I beat Johnny and Gary! Good times w/ good friends.

Johnny uses an underhand toss when he throws. It was a great day to play but we had to hurry because the surf was coming in.

You can even play bocce w/ your arm in a sling. Susan could still play a mean game of bocce even with a broken wrist. You go girl.

Bocce allows you to meet the nicest people. This is Donna & Wayne from Rockingham, NC. Horseshoes is their game, but they took to bocce like a duck takes to water.
Wayne and Susan smoked Donna and me in a game of doubles, 13 to 6. Hope we see them again at the beach - rematch time!

Here was another group of guys we met from Rockingham, NC. We introduced them to bocce, but when some girl friends came up, it was bye bye bocce. They sure made the right choice! From right to left, Erin (front right), Chris to his left, Andrew with the hat and Robbie just about out of the picture.

My nephew Chris lobs a shot at a family beach day on July 4th. He and his dad, Wayne, played my brother, Ken, and me in doubles. Below, Wayne is on the left and Ken is on the right. As you can see, the beach was bustling with people and color. It was a great day.

Look carefully at this picture and the one below. When the slope of too great and you cannot stop the balls from rolling out of the court, you can get a rake or towel with sand or something heavy on it and drag it around the court to roughen up the sand. This will make the balls roll a bit slower and keep them from rolling off of the court.

We used a rake to roughen up the court. This helped slow the balls on the steep slope, keeping them from rolling off of the court.

We met some new bocce friends on the beach: Lisa & Erin from NC, and Doug from Maryland. We played a game of doubles, girls vs guys. Well.... meet the winners in the photo below. Lisa and Erin smoked us like ribs on a BBQ. 13 to 5.

Great game ladies. We will be looking for a rematch. Right Doug?

This is Daniel (left - my daughter Beth's fiancee) and my mom (right). Daniel is playing w/ a broken foot. That's dedication for you.

North Carolina artist Ralph Valentine, from Concord, NC, is a new bocce friend. Ralph paints mostly landscapes in watercolor. I met him on the beach as he was painting under his beach tent. We got in a bunch of bocce that afternoon.

Here is my mom, Lee, and a great group of guys who spent several days at the beach playing bocce - From left to right - Tom (behind my mom, Steven, Elden, Justin and Joe. Mom kept us in food and we pounded the beach w/ bocce balls. It was a blast! Joe also fulfilled his wish of flying a kite-airplane on the beach. (see it below)

Here is Joe and his kite-airplane. He had an eventful day, first crashing it on the top of the building you see. Later, the string got away from him and the kite sailed over the buildings and into ocean blvd. The rest of us jsut played a little bocce and had fun watching Joe run after his kite.

Bocce winners Garry "Goose" Faile & Johnny "Bert" Wilson at our recent weekend with high school friends, January 2011. It was fried pickles at Poos on the waterway, pancakes at Sunrise in Calabash, and wine tasting at La Belle Amie Vineyard. A great weekend with great friends.

What is that? Just what I thought when I walked up on these "two" snakes on a path in the nature preserve near my parents' house in Cherry Grove. One snake had the head of the other snake locked in its mouth. When I picked up the tail of one, they separated and both quickly crawled off into the brush. Cool stuff!

Here is our beach set-up. Our trusty wagon helps get the bocce balls and cooler to the beach. My daughter Beth is taking her chair to sit in the surf. If you look hard you can see the shrimpin' boat in the distance between the two umbrellas. It won't be long before the tide is out and it will be "bocce time!'

Here is Beth sitting in the surf w/ the shrimpin' boat in the distance. Now you know why we like Cherry Grove Beach so much. So relaxing... and great bocce courts.

Here is our set-up on Waites Island, an uninhabited and undeveloped 3.5 mile long island just North of Cherry Grove. We were the only ones there. It was beautifully peaceful.

Susan and I had just finished our last few bocce games for the day. As we returned to my parents' home, this view of the sun setting over the marsh greeted us. Hope you can come and visit the beautiful South Carolina coast sometime soon. Bring your bocce balls, your beach set-up and some good friends, and enjoy this beautiful creation of God.
